The political classes have, as one, internationally denounced Trump’s call for a ban on all Muslim immigration to America.
The howls of indignation, the Hitler comparisons, the cries of racist: Trump, once again has said the unspeakable and, this time, for sure, his campaign must surely be over.
I suspect Trump is going to keep going. Saying the unspeakable so that other, more skillful, politicians have the room to actually say some of the things which need to be said. The big winner will be Senator Cruz whose hardline positions are being mainstreamed every time Trump bellows.
That and Hilly being caught lying, again, about Benghazi and there being evidence there were deployable military assets all combine to make US politics the fascinating spectacular it usually is.
‘The political classes have, as one, internationally denounced Trump’s call for a ban on all Muslim immigration to America’.
Actually, Jay, what they’ve universally denounced is Trump’s call for a ban on all Muslim ENTRY to America.
As for the Hitler comparison – you’re right. They’re absurd and unfair. Hitler sincerely believe that Jews represented an inferior and demonic race. Trump is simply pretending to believe that of Muslims – this week, anyway – because he needs to keep upping the “outrageousness’ ante. That’s different corner of hell.
Trump is floating into a vacuum created by a political/media class unable to effectively grapple with the reality of the connection between Islam and terrorism. I am not sure I am willing to ascribe motive to this because I see Trump as a purely visceral creature. He does not plan his moves, he sees an opportunity and grabs it.
I do, however, see a motive in the political classes race to call Trump a fascist/racist/running dog hyena: they have been exposed as having no plan whatsoever to deal with the connection between Islam and terror. Their sole response to Islamic terror is to deny that the Islamic terror has anything to do with Islam. Which is simply not cutting it. Which leaves lots of room for Trumptian “Simple Solutions”.
(As to Hitler’s beliefs: a friend of mine in law school, listening to a classmate claiming that the beliefs of some defendant or another were “sincere” drolly remarked, “Well Hitler was sincere.”)
“He does not plan his moves, he sees an opportunity and grabs it.”
Perhaps. You’re suggesting that’s somehow less vile?
